Andrey Gugnin

Concert Pianist Andrey Gugnin is rapidly gaining international recognition as a passionate virtuoso performer who possesses an “extraordinarily versatile and agile technique serving an often inspired musical imagination” (Gramophone). In 2020, the jury of the BBC Music Magazine Awards named him the winner in the instrumental category for his recording of Shostakovich’s Preludes and Piano Sonatas for Hyperion Records. Since winning the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition in 2016, Gugnin has continued to build a successful career through concerts and recordings that showcase his passionate interpretations.

In high demand as a concerto soloist, Andrey Gugnin has been invited to perform as a guest artist with major orchestras worldwide, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Utah Symphony, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Musikverein in Vienna, Konzerthaus Berlin, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Carnegie Hall in New York, Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Sydney Opera House, the Great Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory, Mariinsky Concert Hall, the Louvre in Paris, and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall.

Andrey Gugnin has also performed at numerous international festivals, including the Verbier Festival, Ruhr Piano Festival, Mariinsky International Festival, Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Ohrid Summer Festival, and the International Chopin Festival. As a recording artist, he has released a wide-ranging discography spanning solo piano works to concertos. His recording of Liszt’s Transcendental Études (Piano Classics, 2018) was named a Gramophone Editor’s Choice. His recording of Shostakovich’s Concertos (Delos International, 2007) was featured on the soundtrack of Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning film Bridge of Spies. His latest album, Holberg Suite – Ballade & Lyric Pieces, was released in May 2024 on the Hyperion label.

In February 2024, Gugnin won the Dubai Classic Piano International Competition, receiving a €100,000 prize for his final performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Additional awards include upcoming engagements with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra. Andrey Gugnin began his musical studies with Natalia Smirnova, who laid the foundation for his further training with Olga Mechetina, Valery Kastelsky, Lev Naumov, Stanislav Ioudenitch, William Naboré, and Vera Gornostayeva.

Recent highlights of the 2024/25 season include performances with Orchestra del Teatro Goldoni, appearances at the Elbphilharmonie, concerts with the Banatul Philharmonic, La Crosse Symphony Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra as part of his South African tour, as well as a series of concerts in Japan. The 2025/2026 season features appearances in New York as part of the Bard Music Festival, along with tours across Australia, Japan, China, and throughout Europe.
